Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Bernadine J. "Bernie" Nicola, 93, a resident of Davenport, will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 516 Fillmore Street, Davenport. Burial will take place at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. Bernie died Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Bettendorf Health Care Center.
Bernadine Josephine Doner was born on March 18, 1919 in Davenport, a daughter of Patrick James and Barbara Ann (Wagner) Doner. She was united in marriage to Edward C. Nicola on October 26, 1938 at St Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1999, a day before their 61st anniversary.
Bernie was primarily a homemaker. She worked for M.L. Parker as a sales clerk for a time when her daughter went to school. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she was very active in prior years. She participated in the Altar and Rosary Society and the Parents Club. Bernie also volunteered with the Auxiliary at the former Mercy Hospital and Genesis West and for many years with SHARE of Iowa.
Family was the center of her life, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and was very talented at making crafts, especially surrounding the Christmas season. Bernie also loved to cook, and was known for her "black bottom" rolls which were often enjoyed by her family.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.
Bernie is survived by her daughter, Sandra Bryant, Bettendorf; grandsons: Cary (Judie) Bryant, Pickerington, OH and Kevin (Nena) Bryant, Fishers, IN; granddaugthers: Elizabeth Dingeldein, Davenport and Michelle (Terry Jr.) Norris, New Carlisle, OH; a grandson-in-law, Paul Dingeldein, Rock Island;; great grandchildren: David Michael and Nicholas "Cole" Bryant, Pickerington, OH, Justina Dingeldein, Bettendorf, Kelly and Caitlin (fiancé Josh Hernandez) Collins, Buffalo, Garryn Bryant, Fishers, IN; a step-great granddaughter, Carly Norris, OH and a great great grandson Aiden Crotty, OH, and many extended family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, a son-in-law, David Bryant, a great-great grandson, Connor Norris; sisters: Marie Hebbeln, Madeleine Bunge, and Anne Jeanette Scott; brothers, Anthony and James; and brothers-in-law, Richard (Dorothy) Nicola, Arnold Anderson, and a sister-in-law, Joy. May they rest in peace.
