Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Bette Jane Schmid, 86, a resident of Dubuque, formerly a long time resident of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. to begin the visitation. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday. Bette died peacefully Friday, Nov 9th, 2012 at Bethany Home, Dubuque after a brief illness.
Bette was born on June 7, 1926, one of seven children born to John and Edna Davis. Growing up she lived in Moline and Rock Island, IL, graduating from Moline High School and worked for International Harvester. In 1952, she married John J. Schmid, Sr. in Notre Dame, Indiana. They settled in Davenport, Iowa, raising their 5 children Chris, Jack, Kathy, Bob and Nan.
Nicknamed "Bubbles", Bette shared her wonderful laugh and a twinkle in her eyes for those close to her. She was a wonderful homemaker and she was very proud of her philanthropic activities including her 30 year board membership with Catholic Service Board where she had a fondness for The Kahl Home and Cinderella Cellar. She was a board member for the Davenport Library and volunteered countless hours to Junior League and Visiting Nurses. She is preceded in death by her parents Edna and John Davis, several sisters and brothers and her son Bob. Bette is survived by her loving husband John J. Schmid, Sr, her brother Paul Davis (wife Karen),children; Chris Schmid of Hudson, WI, Jack and Mantea Schmid of Dubuque, IA, Kathy (Schmid) and Chuck Munson of Paradise Valley, AZ, Nan Schmid and Steve Johnson of New York City, plus her adoring grandchildren Dana Munson of Denver, CO, John III and Alex Schmid of Dubuque, in addition to many Schmid relatives throughout the country.
