Funeral services to celebrate the life of Betty M. Dierickx, 81, a resident of Muscatine, Iowa, formerly of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. The family will greet friends Friday from 4:00 to7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Mrs. Dierickx died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, in Bettendorf. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her passing.
Betty Mae Fanth was born May 24, 1931 in Crosby, Minnesota a daughter of Roy and Nora (OBrien) Fanth. Her family moved back to the Quad-City area in her youth returning annually to northern Minnesota for vacations and to visit family. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1949. On June 15, 1951 she married David Dierickx at Camp Atterbury, Indiana where he was in the Army. In 1952 they lived in Ellwangen, Germany for 14 months where Dave was stationed.
After the army they lived in the Quad-City area moving to Muscatine in 1964 when they purchased their farm near Wild Cat Den where they farmed for 25 years welcoming family and friends every Sunday for dinner and conversation. She amazingly realized that a junior high classmate lived next door and she began attending monthly get-togethers with the Hep Cat Deb Club a group of classmates who formed the club while in junior high and who still meet monthly to this day. During these years she kept her five kids in line as well as many of their friends while helping with the farm, gardening, canning and eventually working as a cook at Montpelier Elementary School, later working at the Q-C Times in the circulation department for 10 years retiring in 1985. She and Dave then moved to Remer, Minnesota purchasing Fanth's Resort started 50 years earlier by Betty's Aunt Leah and Uncle Harold Fanth. She enjoyed seeing the many friends and families that returned each summer spanning many generations. Betty had a wit and feistiness that made all that knew her smile and love her. She had a special way of letting other drivers know when she wasn't happy with their driving. She enjoyed her family and friends but especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and grand pets and the annual trip back to Iowa for the winter where she could be closer to them. She was a generous and giving person that will be deeply missed by all that knew her especially her family.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Trinity Pathway Hospice
