Ferris Elaine (Hyett) Schaefer, 96, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at Silvercrest Assisted Living, Davenport. Ferris Elaine Schaefer was born on November 24, 1915 in Millersburg, Illinois, the daughter of Jonas and Lillie Hyett. She attended primary school in Millersburg and secondary school in Aledo, Illinois, enrolled in the Mercer County Illinois Nursing School, and graduated with a degree in nursing. She began her nursing profession at Mercy Hospital. She later worked at Good Samaritan Nursing Home and as a home health care nurse. Ferris also volunteered as a Mercy Auxiliary "Pink Lady" for 30 years, receiving several service awards during this time. Continuing her call to help others, Ferris also volunteered for many years at The Discovery Shop.
Ferris married Francis Fitzpatrick in 1940 and they lived in Rock Island until he enlisted in the Army. They had two children, Jay and Susan. Fran was a lieutenant stationed in France and was killed in action September 17, 1944.
Ferris moved to Davenport in 1952 and met Les Schaefer, who she married in 1954. Les was a professor at St. Ambrose College and they had four children, Greg, Joe, MaryAnn, and Mark. Les and Ferris recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
In retirement, Ferris enjoyed traveling to different parts of the country, including Florida during the winter. She was an avid reader and enjoyed meeting and dining with friends and family. She is especially thankful of being able to see all of her children frequently these past few months.
Funeral Services and Mass of the Resurrection for Ferris Schaefer will be held at Noon on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be 11am until time of service Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to the Genesis Auxiliary or to the church for masses to be said in her name. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Ferris will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband Les, of Davenport; children, Jay (MaryEllen) Fitzpatrick of Bettendorf, Iowa, Susan Fitzpatrick of Albuquerque, Greg (Toni) Schaefer of Marion, Iowa, Joe Schaefer of Burlington, WI, MaryAnn (Greg) Dombrowski of Madison, Wisconsin and Mark Schaefer of Lees Summit, Missouri; 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Polito of El Paso, Texas.
