John Patrick Cassidy was born October 13, 1936 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Leo and Clara (Buelow) Cassidy, and died unexpectedly Monday, November 19 at Genesis Medical Center. John was a graduate of St. Columbkille's and Loras College in Dubuque, where he competed on the golf team. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1959 - 1965. John was united in marriage to Norma Knipper on July 29, 1961.
John worked for Ferguson Enterprises and related companies for 36 years, retiring in 2006. After retirement, John enjoyed many rounds of golf both as a participant and a ranger at Glynn's Creek. A highlight was scoring a hole-in-one while playing with his grandchildren in July, 2011.
Those left to honor his memory include his beautiful bride of 51 years, Norma, and their children: Kristyn (Kurt) Tjaden, Bettendorf, Sean (Sharon) Cassidy, Darnestown MD, Bridgitt (Sanford) Pauly, Cincinnati, OH, Molly (Robert) Petersen, Aurora, IL, Matthew (Mindy) Cassidy, Houston, TX, Megan (Keith) Crider, Cincinnati, OH, Margaret (John) Mysogland, Cincinnati, OH, Kathryn (Michael) Rhinehart, Chicago, IL; 26 loving grandchildren; his sisters, Catherine Gallagher, Waterloo, IA, Patricia Brady, Rockville, MD, Pauline Rowell, Dubuque, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Virginia.
Funeral Services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon Friday, November 23, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 4097 18th Street, Bettendorf. His family will greet friends Friday from 9:00 a.m. until Mass time at the church. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Loras College, or Women's Choice Center, a pro-life pregnancy support center. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
