Patricia Ann Barnard, 89, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Services to celebrate her long and wonderful life will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 15, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 121 W. 12th Street, Davenport, Iowa. The family will greet friends one hour before the service in the Great Hall of the church.
Private inurnment will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral or the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, 2546 Tech Drive, Bettendorf, IA 52722.
Patricia Ann McClelland was born September 4, 1923 in Davenport, Iowa a daughter of David Nelson and Nancy (Dow) McClelland. She graduated from the former St. Katherine's School, Davenport and received her associates degree from Monticello College, Godfrey, Illinois.
She married Franklin L. "Whitey" Barnard on October 2, 1945 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Davenport. He preceded her in death May 12, 2000.
Patty was a cradle-to-grave member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Her spiritual life was always strong and she was involved in church life in many ways throughout her life, most recently as a Befriender and a member of the Hildegards. Earlier in her life, she was a wonderful support to her family and also was active, playing tennis and golf. She enjoyed traveling with Whitey all over the world and loved entertaining friends in their home. Her "Patty's Pickles" were a signature gift to many friends every year. Reading was a central part of her life and she enjoyed her book study group at the Bettendorf Public Library. She also was a winning Rummikub player.
She lived at the Fountains in Bettendorf during the last six years of her life and found wonderful friends and care there. The family wishes to thank the staff there and Drs. Kettlekamp, McKay, and Bruyntjens for the care they provided. Patty will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was a true classic, a joy to be with, a great listener, and a person with style and grace.
Survivors include her children; daughter, Barbara Barnard Stein and Harry Olmstead, Iowa City; sons, Thomas Barnard, Yucaipa, CA, and Christopher Barnard, Davenport; her grandchildren, Jena Panton-Barnard, Bellingham, WA, David Stein, Iowa City and a sister, Mary Halligan, Scottsdale, AZ.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, David in 1970, and her dear cousins Shirley Meredith and Nancy Power.
Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
