Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Vivian P. Schmitt, 90, a resident of Davenport will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport, where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. There will be an additional visitation at the church on Wednesday prior to mass from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Vivian died Friday, October 19, 2012, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, surrounded by her loving family.
Vivian Pearl Friday was born on September 20, 1922, in Fairbury, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Hudson) Friday. She was united in marriage to Edward M. Schmitt on June 20, 1945 in Moline. He preceded her in death on February 16, 1993. Vivian was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church and in later years enjoyed attending St. Anthony's Church and serving the needy at McAnthony's Window.
Vivian graduated from business college in 1942. Upon graduation, she began her career as a secretary at International Harvester, Rock Island. She later worked for the Rock Island Lines Railroad where she met her husband, Edward ("Smitty").
Vivian's greatest pleasures came from spending time with her family and cherished watching her grandchildren as they participated in their various activities. She also enjoyed her many travels including trips to Connecticut, Italy, and San Francisco.
Vivian is survived by her nine children, daughters, Barbara (Charles) Puchta, Kathleen Schmitt, all of Bettendorf, Mary Patricia (Dale) Paulson, Davenport, Joan (Mark) Stickler, Bettendorf, Sheila (William) Ehlers, Davenport, Carolyn (Michael) Matthews, Southbury, CT; three sons, Thomas (Patty) Schmitt, Glenwood, IA, Daniel Schmitt, Davenport and David (Erin) Schmitt, 24 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson, Michael Schaecher and her two brothers, Don and Max Friday. May they rest in peace.
Her family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staffs of the Trinity Medical Centers, Bettendorf and Rock Island, and to Dr. Rupa Bontu for the care and compassion given to their mother.
