Walter L. Dray, Sr., 95, a former resident of Davenport currently residing in Burnsville, MN, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 06, 2012 in Burnsville.
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be 8:30 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 916 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service offered Friday at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home that all are invited to attend.
Walter Lawrence Dray, Sr. was born on January 31, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of Joseph F. and Beatrice (Hughes) Dray, Sr. He was united in marriage to Mary Margaret "Peg" Wise whom he met while he was attending the University of Notre Dame and she was attending St. Mary's College. They were married on May 29, 1941 in the Bernini Chapel on the campus of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. They celebrated over sixty-five years of marriage.
Walt graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana with a BSME degree. He was employed by the Bendix Corporation for 40 years, retiring in 1980 as the Director of Engineering. He held several patents from his years at Bendix. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the Quad Cities Notre Dame Club, Bendix Retirees and was on the Board of the QCA Technical College.
Walt was a renaissance man; he was always trying to determine or devise a better way to make or do something. He kept his mind active with games; he and Peg would have a Scrabble game each evening to cap the night. He was an avid Bridge player, playing his last game in April, participating in a Bridge marathon.
He will be lovingly remembered, and the legacy that his family will cherish will be the love and devotion he showed to his wife, children and grandchildren. He was always popular with the younger kids, whether grandchildren, great-grandchildren or their friends, he could certainly be a kid with them!
Memorials in Walter's name can be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Assumption High School or to a charity of your choice.
Those left to honor Walt's memory include his children and their spouses, Peggy (Don) Fouts, Dorothy (Roger) Heimke, Walter "Butch" (Sally) Dray, Jr., Joseph Patrick (Georgia) Dray, Terry (JJ) Gerard, Beth (Frank) Deal, Kay Pifer, and Barbara Dray, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren, and a brother, Joseph F. (Isabel) Dray, Jr., Asheville, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Peg and a sister, Sr. Dorothy Rose Dray, SCN. May they rest in peace.
