Memorial services to celebrate the life of Vera Shelton, 82, a resident of Davenport will be 6:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Mt. Sinai C.O.G.I.C. Church at 4820 North Pine, Davenport. Her family will greet friends at the church prior to services from 4:00 p.m. until service time at 6:00 p.m. The Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Honoring her wish the rite of cremation was accorded and private inurnment services will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal at a later date.
Vera passed away peacefully at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, Davenport surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 15, 2012.
Vera Carter was born August 23, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of Virgil and Emma (Price) Carter. She was united in marriage to Frank G. Shelton. He preceded her in death in 1983.
She was a graduate of St. Ambrose College. Her prior training included commercial arts at Stowe Teachers College and Harris Teaching College as well as other artistic achievements.
Vera worked as an Independent Artist creating and teaching art in institutions throughout the world where her works of art and poetry are exhibited worldwide. Before becoming a member of Mt. Sinai she was a devout Christian presiding as Mother of the House of Prayer in Akron, Ohio and was cherished by many friends there.
Memorials may be made to her family.
Those left to honor her memory include her 3 children and their spouses, Dr. Jeri Brown Johnston and husband Dr. Mark Johnston of Canada, Zina M. Shelton Jones, of Davenport, Juan and Sheila Shelton also of Davenport. Her grandchildren; Tiffany and Todd Brown, Simora Jones, Juan (Dontae), Trenton, Kamden, and Shalana (Destiney) Shelton; great grandchildren; Jennifer Naila Brown, Maylasha Asjiona Shelton; a sister, Eunice (Henry) Crowley and cousin Theophillus Clay of St. Louis; extended family; Jane, Evelina and the Price and Straughter families; a sister-in-law, Brownie Shelton, St. Louis; nieces and nephews; Abdul Bey (Stanley), Minister Frank B. Smith, III. of Chicago, Cedric M. Henry, Cincinnati, OH, Brittney, Brianna, Lisa, Stacy, Leslie, Francesca and other loving extended family, Robin, Deandra, Tenile, Robert, Tolly, Erin, and Jahlil; her close friend, Sister Jeannie Bell and a special friend, David Maurice and a host of other loving extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Frank Smith, and a brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Ethelyn Carter.
